The man in the mirror.

Today marks the one month mark since the Law Office of Wyndel G. Darville opened for business.   It's ironic that my focus has shifted from the practice of law to marketing and advertising.  Those are the two most important and often over looked aspects in business.  There are many great product and service ideas in the market place but many of them are doomed to failure because of the lack of a sound marketing plan.  In addition to having a sound marketing plan, the creator/owner/manager must have a sense of discipline in sticking with the plan.  I read quote sometime ago about by a famous general.  He said, "A good plan executed today is better than a perfect plan executed next week."  I took that quote an ran with it.  For better of worse, here I am and I am ready to serve.

I decided to make the leap to private practice for the reason that most people decide to open their own business-- Freedom.  It was a difficult choice.  I had to balance several factors.  I weighed the security of a great job with benefits versus the unlimited potential earnings and long term financial security of private practice.  I considered my love for public service against, a system that has become more concerned about numbers and less about justice.  Finally, I factored in the many relationships I built over the years and how my decision might be viewed by my colleagues.    Taking all of that into consideration, I decided for on time in my life, it was time to consider what I had in my heart.  I truly wanted to be my own man and chart my own course.   What better way than to start your own business doing something you love?

At some point I plan on returning to public life.  When is any one's guess.  But be it 2 years 5 years or 10 years from now, I am sure I will be faced with the same daunting questions of security,  job satisfaction, and public perception.  At the end of the day as I look at myself in the mirror before I go to sleep, I will ask myself the question am I happy with the man in the mirror?  I pray the answer is yes.
